I was born in Salt Lake City and grew up on the move: Albuquerque, then Carson City, then back to Utah. I went to four different high schools. I started in special education classes, worked my way out of every one of them and graduated as a member of the National Honor Society.
I raised four children, three daughters and a son, and for most of those years I did it as a single mother. They are now amazing adults. Two of them are now serving their faith and their country. Raising them taught me that every child needs something different, and that with patience, hard work and God, you can make it through almost anything.
Along the way I lost 115 pounds and taught fitness classes to thousands of people for 12 years. I competed in pageants and won three state titles. I earned a first-degree black belt. During COVID I spent a year on the road in my van, traveling thousands of miles and following promptings to serve strangers one day at a time.
Then I stood in Washington, D.C. and felt my purpose clearly: to serve my country. Everything I've lived through, the hard seasons included, is why I can stand in front of a room and say without doubt: we can all do tough things and come out the other side better, not bitter.
